Beijing Issues Strong Warning Against Taiwan’s Pursuit of Independence
China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi, issued a stern warning against Taiwan’s pursuit of independence, stating that any steps towards sovereignty would face severe consequences.
This follows Taiwan’s recent election of pro-sovereignty candidate Lai Ching-te as president, despite Beijing’s opposition. Wang emphasized that attempts at independence would be “harshly punished” both historically and legally.
China, asserting Taiwan as its territory, insisted that Lai’s victory would not alter the “inevitable trend of China’s reunification.
” Wang declared that pursuing independence is a “dead end” and reaffirmed the principle of “one China,” stating that Taiwan has never been a separate country.
He stressed that such efforts would endanger the well-being of Taiwan’s residents, harm China’s fundamental interests, and jeopardize peace in the Taiwan Strait region.
Tensions persist as Beijing maintains its stance on reunification, signaling a challenging relationship between China and Taiwan.
